This is a sad story, But there is a “redeeming” note in the poignancy of the quote, last 2 paragraphs
Because of my son’s illness, he has not seen his friends in a long time. For the most part, in between hospitalization and doctor’s visits, it is he and I at home, waiting out on whether or not the new medicine would work, and I, always on alert for those unpredictable moments when he goes through an episode and I have be on his side to comfort him.
Yesterday, we had a rare opportunity to get out of the house and visit his cousin. On the road, he was pondering on what he can do to change his life, as it seems to him that it has just been one long phase of illness.
He reminisced that he used to have some friends and now he has none due to being home-bound, and that he doesn’t know if he can even trust anybody anymore. I said that he can trust me, I’ve always been there and I’ll always be there for him. And then he said this:
"I feel like that elephant in the zoo that they were talking about in the news. He is sad because he wants to be with other elephants but there are no other elephants around who understand and care about him. The only one who cares about him is his zoo-keeper.He and his zoo-keeper against the world.
You’re the zoo-keeper, Mommy.”
